Thursday, April 9, 2020 10:00-11:15 AM  PM |

In this rapidly escalating COVID 19 environment, families are frightened about what would happen if they or a loved one became sick.  In this session, PK Law Estate Planning and Elder Law Attorney Cheryl Jones, will provide attendees with an understanding of the essential estate planning documents needed in a crisis. Attendees will understand the benefits of having basic estate planning documents such as a will, power of attorney, healthcare directive and Maryland Medical Orders for Life Sustaining Treatment (MOLST) in place during times of crisis, as well as an understanding of what is entailed in a guardianship proceeding, and how to ensure that someone can take care of your minor children in a crisis.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify the requirements for a valid Maryland Advance Health Care Directive and MOLST, and the legal health care decision-making process.
  • Identify the requirements for a valid Maryland Durable Financial Power of Attorney and the reasons for implementation, and why a guardianship proceeding may be necessary without one.
  • Outline the basic components of estate planning, including Wills and other methods of transferring assets at death.
  • Identify the circumstances under which a standby guardian for a minor child would be necessary, and how to ensure that the appropriate documentation is in place to provide for one.
