On January 12, 2018, the Maryland Senate voted to override Governor Hogan’s veto of the General Assembly’s paid leave bill from last year’s legislative session.

The paid leave bill (formally known as the Maryland Healthy Working Families Act) is slated to become law in Maryland on February 11th requiring employers with over 14 employees to provide PAID sick and safe leave at a minimum of 1 hour per 30 hours worked and employers with 14 employees or less to provide UNPAID sick and safe leave at a minimum of 1 hour per 30 hours worked.  The law provides for potentially severe damages and penalties for non-compliance.
