HPK Attorney Mark F. Scurti has represented numerous same-sex couples.  The Daily Record article focuses on the uncertainly many such couples face when, after being legally married in another state, seek a divorce in Maryland.  While some same-sex couples are granted a divorce, others are refused.  Most recently a same-sex Maryland couple legally married in San Francisco were refused a divorce by a Circuit Court judge in Prince George’s County.  The judge described the circumstances of the marriage as “unnatural,” and refused to grant the divorce based on lack of subject matter jurisdiction.  Mr. Scurti will be filing a brief to the Maryland Court of Special Appeals on behalf of his client, one of the women refused the divorce in Prince George’s County.  The article also describes another instance where one of Mr. Scurti’s clients was granted a divorce that was later rescinded.
