Pessin Katz Law, P.A. (PK Law), is pleased to announce that Member Mark F. Scurti has been appointed by Governor O’Malley to serve on the ten-member Board of Directors for Maryland Legal Services Corporation.   He will be replacing outgoing member, The Honorable Robert Kershaw.

Mr. Scurti is a Member with the law firm of Pessin Katz Law, P.A. where he concentrates his legal practice in all aspects of bankruptcy proceedings and debt restructuring and same-sex law.  He also handles estate planning matters, adoptions, name and gender changes, divorce and dissolution, custody matters and family law mediations.  In 1991 he received his J.D. from the University of Baltimore School of Law and in 1987 and 1985 he received his M.B.A. and B.A., respectively, from Loyola College in Maryland. 

Mr. Scurti is well known throughout Maryland for his commitment to helping ensure access to pro bono legal resources for those in need.  He has provided numerous hours of pro bono time providing legal counsel in the areas of bankruptcy, debt consolidation, foreclosure assistance and same-sex legal issues through the Maryland Pro Bono Resource Center, the Legal Aid Bureau of Maryland, and Maryland Volunteer Lawyer’s Service.  He is also Past President of the Bar Association of Baltimore City, Baltimore Bar Foundation, LGBT Bar of Maryland, Pro Bono Resource Center of Maryland, Free State Legal Project, a clinic for low income LGBT individuals, and past Chair of the Maryland State Bar Association Consumer Bankruptcy Section.  He has served on the MSBA Board of Governors, the National LGBT Bar Association board as well as a number of local and state bar association committees and sections. 

In recognition of his commitment, he was named Maryland Volunteers Lawyers Services’ “Volunteer of the Year” and was a Legal Aid Bureau of Maryland “Top 100” Civil and Human Rights award recipient in 2011. 

The Maryland Legal Services Corporation (MLSC) was established by the Maryland General Assembly in 1982 to raise funds and make grants to nonprofit organizations for the provision of civil legal assistance to low-income persons in Maryland. MLSC is governed by a Board of Directors appointed by the Governor of Maryland and confirmed by the Maryland Senate.  MLSC’s principal funding source is the Interest on Lawyer Trust Account (IOLTA) program. Other major funding is from surcharges on court filing fees.
