In a split decision (5-4), the Supreme Court ruled that marriage is a fundamental right which the States cannot deny to citizens, thereby upholding same sex marriage laws across the nation.  The majority opinion, issued this morning, on the 2nd anniversary of the Windsor decision (striking down DOMA) and the 12th anniversary of Lawrence v. Texas (striking down anti-sodomy laws in Texas), Justice Kennedy writes: “No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice, and family. … [The challengers] ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law. The Constitution grants them that right.”
