Maryland Legislation Update

Governor Hogan has held six bill signing sessions to date. Two bill signings remain on the Governor’s schedule for May 2 and May 4. Under Maryland law all bills are to be presented to the Governor by April 30 this year, the 20th day after adjournment of April 10th, and he must veto them, if he wishes to do so, within thirty days of their presentment or by May 30th this year. Otherwise, he must sign a bill or allow it to become law without his signature, often said to be an expression of a Governor’s displeasure with the legislation he or she refuses to sign. Continue reading

Not a Trade Secret


In U.S. v Jennifer Salgado & Jenny’s Tax Service, (No. 1:16-CV-03186-SMJ, Mar. 24, 2017) the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Washington (the “Court”) held that a taxpayer’s client list and client identifying data were not trade secrets under Washington state law but that because the clients had a reasonable expectation of privacy that information could not be put into the record without redaction. Continue reading

Nine Things To Know About Baltimore City’s New Zoning Law Impacting Check Cashing Establishments

The revised zoning code was passed by the Baltimore City Council on December 5, 2016 and becomes effective on June 5, 2017. Any applications filed prior to June 5th will be evaluated under the existing (“old”) zoning regulations, regardless of whether the application is approved or denied prior to that date.
