Rochelle’s Special Education Tips
When you report to parents on a child’s reading comprehension, make sure the Present Levels in the IEP reflect whether the data provided is based on the child reading independently or being read to by an adult or by a form of Assistive Technology. Most people assume that when a teacher reports that a student is comprehending reading material on a 4th grade level, that means the student is independently reading and comprehending. Otherwise, what is really being done is reporting on a student’s receptive language skills. This is very misleading to parents and to others reading the IEP.
