Things Aren’t So Sweet If You Do Not Do Them Right

It is imperative that you meet to review and if necessary, revise the IEP when a student goes on Home and Hospital Instruction. Start from the first page and review every page thereafter. It is very likely you will not be addressing the same goals and objectives, implementing the same accommodations, or providing the same services as you addressed and provided when the student was receiving instruction in a school setting. Often, the IEP team will only change the IEP to mention Home and Hospital Instruction on the LRE page. That one change will not, in most cases, suffice. If a parent files a complaint that you have not implemented the IEP while the student is receiving Home and Hospital Instruction, and you have not made the changes to reflect a Home and Hospital IEP, then shame on you. Remember too, that Home and Hospital Instruction does not usually provide all of the same supports and services that a student receives in the school setting. After all, the student is sick, either physically or emotionally, and the FAPE you should provide in the school setting will not be the same FAPE that the sick student receives at home.
