Rochelle’s Special Education Tips
The Russians are Coming, The Russians are Coming!!!
We hear a lot in the news about Russian espionage in connection with national affairs. Of equal interest for readers of Tips is espionage during IEP team meetings. Not cloak and dagger espionage, but secret taping. Always assume you are being taped during an IEP team meeting. Yes, it is illegal to tape without the knowledge of the person being taped but that does not mean it is not being done. When there is a break in the meeting, and people walk out of the meeting, assume someone left their taping device on. If you have something to say that you do not want being taped, leave the room and talk in the hallway. Likewise, if you leave the meeting room for a break, close your notebooks or someone may take a cell phone picture of a document left sitting on the table. In some cases, you may want to take your notebook with you. I remember the time before cell phone were omnipresent when I left the meeting room and upon my return saw that my binder had been opened. Later, someone found a sensitive memorandum from my binder lying next to a Xerox machine. Obviously, the removal and copying of the document occurred while I was out of the room. Live and learn.
