The story discussed a new Maryland law, to be effective October 1 of this year, that will allow trusts to be set up to provide for the care of pets. Basically, you will need to name a caregiver and a trustee to manage the money in the trust and reimburse the caregiver’s expenses. Prior to the law, pets were considered property under Maryland law that could not receive assets.
